Inside Headstone Experts
Making a Headstone ] Materials ]

We had several responsibilities with headstones.

We had to identify types and talk about what made each one different.  Then as part of our community service for the cemetery we logged the GPS location of each headstone.

We e-mailed some experts who design headstones and asked the following questions;

bulletHow do they make headstones?
bulletWhen the headstone carver makes the headstone, how does he know the right name?
bulletHow do they know where one headstone goes if there is not a lot of space?
bullet

Why do some headstones look different? Why are the designs different? What do the designs mean?

bullet

How long does it take to make a tombstone?

Joseph J. McCabe at Ever life Memorials answered our questions as follows;

How do you make headstones?  Follow these links to learn how bronze and granite headstones are made (after you have read the material use the back button to return to our site).

When the headstone carver makes the headstone, how does he know the right name?  Usually a surviving family member orders the headstone and provides the persons name and dates at the time of ordering.

How do they know where one headstone goes if there is not a lot of space?  I'm not sure I understand this question but I'll try. The cemetery keeps records of where everyone is buried and they usually regulate the size of a headstone.

Why do some headstones look different?  Many headstones are intended to be unique much like the people they are for.

Why are the designs different?  A design is usually picked to reflect a personality or interest of the person it is for.

What do the designs mean?  There are many elements of a headstone design that have symbolic meaning. For more on their meanings click here

How long does it take to make a headstone?  It all depends on several factors such as materials, color of granite, size, and level of customization, but generally one can be made in a couple of months.
