Mexican-Americans and Spanish-Americans

Before Solano County belonged to the United States it belonged to the Mexicans. Most Mexicans raised cattle here, not crops.

The Vaca and Pena families left New Mexico because the constant fighting of the Mexican leaders, Comanche and Apache Native Americans, and other people. They heard about Solano County and moved here! They arrived in California in 1841.

Once they were here they got a land grant from General Vallejo. This land grant covered over 44,000 acres and ran from Lagoon Valley almost to Dixon.
