MAGGIE,
resident at the Wildlife Center
since July 1997, is a Yellow-Billed Magpie, Pica nuttali.
Magpies are members of the CORVID family, which also includes ravens,
crows and jays. Of the 100 species of Corvids world-wide, 15 are
found in North America, north of Mexico.
Corvids are extremely intelligent and adjust
well to people in their search for food. This can cause them some
problems as they can become dependant on humans, as happened with
Maggie.
When she was found, it was believed that
she was a myna bird due to her juvenile bare face. By the time she
was brought to us four months later, she was imprinted on humans
- and now cannot be released. Maggie will be with us for life, which
again emphasizes the importance of proper care for wildlife by professionals.
